    Director's Notes:

"The Apple Tree" has taken a special place in my heart for many, many reasons – not only for its uniqueness, charm, and wit, but also because of the memories I will always keep. It has been difficult to write these notes because there is so much that can be said about everyone involved. It was only after last night's rehearsal that I was able to really watch what was going on around me in the auditorium – and I realized it was the reason I do what I do. I had forgotten how magical it is to hear the orchestra warming up for the first time and to feel that wave go through you that teeters between nausea and excitement. There were kids detailing the backdrop and others fixing and painting set pieces, all the while laughing. There were parents and crew kids with tools and sewing machines, dressing set pieces and fixing costumes. Listening to the overture, I realized that "The Apple Tree" was no longer just a script, a score, and a soundtrack – it became ours. I would like to thank the administration, staff, production, and parents for their dedication to this production – I have never seen a community put so much of their own time into a show. It truly does take a village, and this is one director who is delighted not to be the only member of that village this time! Thanks to Bobby for so many afternoons spent helping the kids. Thanks to Megan and Justin for giving us beautiful music and such great sets – and also for forgiving me for not knowing things that I should have paid more attention to in music and tech classes in college. Thanks to my family for their support and enthusiasm throughout this season – especially to Wesley for our Saturday afternoons. Thanks to my husband for every single thing he does to make it easier for me to be at rehearsal – and especially thanks for our house. It is finally time to cut your hair! Thanks to the pets for just being themselves. The greatest appreciation has been saved for the end – I give my cast and crew the biggest thanks of all. You will never know how much I have enjoyed the afternoons in rehearsal spent laughing. You have opened your hearts to me and to this show, and I will be so sad to see this time end. To see you guys hop on board for the show nobody has hear of and to hear you singing the songs to yourselves has filled my heart more than you will ever know. Seniors – I only wish we had more time because I think this was really just the beginning. I know you will be brilliant in your futures, and hope that you will always remember to defy gravity.
